 About Us

The Belize Cancer Center Dangriga (BCCD) was the country’s first established facility dedicated to provide cancer care and services to the nation’s citizens, especially those who were financially indigent and socially underserved.

In partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Belize Cancer Society, it opened its doors to address the immediate oncology needs of patients and families on October 1, 2008. Prior to its opening, there were no oncology services accessible or available in the country. It’s primary sponsors, Dr. Ellsworth Grant and Dellone Pascascio RN, MN choose the welcoming community of Dangriga to establish and conduct the business of delivering sensitive, compassionate, best practice care and treatment to anyone seeking such care.

What Documentation Do We Ask From You

Today, everyone visiting the BCCD is greeted warmly and respectfully. Patients with a confirmed diagnosis of cancer, seeking treatment are asked to provide the following medical information: Copy of a pathology or biopsy report. Written reports of imaging studies (X-Ray, Ultrasound, CT Scan, MRI). Recent lab results to include a complete blood count and chemistry profile. Requested medical information may be submitted physically (in-person) or electronically using the most reliable means of communication available. Physicians referring patients/ families to BCCD are asked to complete a referral form or submit a health summary, which includes all relevant clinical information. This enables informed assessment and decision making by the receiving medical oncologist. The BCCD nursing staff submits patient clinical information to the medical hematologist-oncologist for review. The oncologist, in reviewing the clinical data, may request additional studies or diagnostic tests. The staff conveys the request to the patient/ family and provides guidance on getting them done.

What Happens To The Clinical Information Provided

All requested patient information is then evaluated by the medical oncologist. An individualized treatment plan, specific to the patient’s  cancer diagnosis is established, within 7-14 days, and forwarded to the BCCD staff for individualized discussion with the patient and her/his family of choice. Treatment begins only after being approved by the patient, legal guardian or responsible decision maker.

Prior to treatment, the plan is shared and the patient is encouraged to ask questions or  seek clarification on any aspects of care about which he/she has concerns. Time is given for the patient to involve any person he/she feels is important in the decision making process. It is not unusual for a patient to request time for a family meeting in deciding to make that  incredibly important first step on the treatment journey.

At this juncture, BCCD staff’s primary responsibility is to address questions and concerns honestly and compassionately, including those about alternative therapies, so the patient/ family can make informed decisions about accepting or not accepting the recommended treatment plan.
